Who is Sarah Byrnes?

Sarah Byrnes is the Health Communications Director who provides strategic direction on federal contracts with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With over 16 years of experience in public health communication, she specializes in translating complex science into messages that inspire healthier behaviors.

Sarah is deeply committed to improving her community through health education and strategic communication that empowers individuals to make informed decisions. She has led national efforts to educate youth on the dangers of vaping and currently works to raise awareness of chronic disease research funded by NIH. She holds a master’s degree in Communications from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s in Journalism and Spanish Literature from the University of Arizona.

She has lived in Upper Moreland for more than 10 years with her husband, three children, and miniature schnauzer.

Serving the residents of Upper Moreland

Sarah Byrnes currently serves on the Board of School Directors for the Upper Moreland Township School District. She was appointed in 2022 and subsequently elected in 2023 to complete the remainder of the term. Over the past two years, she has held the roles of Board Treasurer and Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee. Her term concludes in December 2025.

School Board Highlights

  • As Treasurer and Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, Sarah oversaw the district’s budgeting process for two school years, bringing transparency and accountability to financial planning.

  • Oversaw the purchase and renovation of a new Administration Building, gaining firsthand experience with municipal facilities planning and construction.

  • Initiated and commissioned a comprehensive facilities study to identify and prioritize building updates across the district, supporting strategic decision-making and operational improvements.

  • Participated in successful negotiations with the Upper Moreland Education Association teachers’ union, resulting in the adoption of a new four-year contract—an important step in strengthening labor relations and ensuring educational stability.

  • Helped expand programming for special education students aged 18–22 by securing additional staff and renovating space within the new Administration Building. This program, launching in fall 2025, will provide these students with an age-appropriate setting and greater access to community-based learning.

  • Supported the adoption of district policies to protect all students and served as the Board’s liaison to the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Committee.
